Back before the U.S. Game crash, we didn't have any TV show or anything to see what the game would actually be like. No reviewers either. Gen 3 brought all of that in, and thus showed the necessity for critics. Most of us old enough to remember that knows how devastating it would be if publishers create a review-less situation. (And some of them are trying hard to have it so not only are certain games not reviewed before they come out, but even add in stuff after Reviews go out, which are deceptive practices.Still, it is wild how hardware popularity is so different in major locations. I remember the days when the Commodore Amiga was a huge hit in Europe and the U.K., but the U.S. pretty much ignored it.
